ANDREA MANCINI

Something that you might hear quite often from many of my fellow cosmetologists and co-workers is that they sort of fell into this industry. For me, that is totally not the case. I was born for this line of work. Doing hair and makeup and staying fashion-forward has been my passion since I was just a little girl.

All through my childhood and into my teen years, I was the hair girl. Always playing around and styling my mom, sister, friends, Barbies, and even baby dolls! It just came naturally to me. So when it was time to start applying to colleges and figure out my career goal, it was a no-brainer. The beginning of my senior year of high school, I heard about this prestigious cosmetology school that had recently opened a new location in Ann Arbor, Michigan: the Douglas J Aveda Institute. I brought home a ton of information and pamphlets about the school and the education it provided. After reading through everything and talking with my parents, we came to the conclusion that this might definitely be the place for me! Almost immediately, I called to set up an informational tour of the facility.

I remember the first time I walked into this modern and sophisticated salon-like institute, I completely fell in love. The program I chose was considered part-time. I went to school Monday through Friday from 5:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. for approximately 15 months (in the state of Michigan, the required 1,500 hours). Looking back now, it seems like school flew right by. I was 18 years old, fresh out of high school, attending cosmetology school in downtown Ann Arbor, and having the time of my life learning about something I loved to do. I met a lot of amazing people from all walks of life, but with the same common goal: to make others look and feel beautiful.

About a year and a half after graduating from Douglas J and successfully passing my state boards to become an officially licensed cosmetologist, I had the pleasure of being hired at Brown & DeLine, a highly acclaimed salon and spa in Ann Arbor. I can honestly say this is when my career officially took off, and I’ve never looked back!

For the last eight years, I have had the pleasure of working among some of the most talented professionals in the industry. The saying goes that you learn the basics when you’re in school, and then once you step inside a real salon, the possibilities of furthering your education and skills are endless. That has definitely been true for me at Brown & DeLine! This place is my second home, my second family, my love and passion. I have flourished and will continue to be the best daymaker—doing what I absolutely love to do in an ever-growing industry that I was made for!
